New Parents

For parents, being told that your child suffers from a serious health problem or disability can hit you like a ton of bricks. You can be paralyzed with fear. You can be overcome with guilt. You can confront the stages of grief – denial, anger, bargaining, depression. This is all a normal response. You are not alone. All parents facing this type of situation experience these emotions.

What can you do? How can you cope? The best way through this turmoil is to seek information – to find out what is known about your child’s condition and what is unknown. With facts, you can confront your fears and begin to take action on behalf of your child.

During the past decade, researchers have learned much about disorders of the corpus callosum. New medical imaging technologies make it easier to diagnose. We can identify and classify the disorder, but we cannot predict the outcome for any given child. Although the structural disorder inside the brain cannot be changed or cured, the outcome for the child is going to depend on how he or she is treated with medicines, counseled with coping strategies, educated in both academic and social skills, and guided through a two decade long journey from infancy to adulthood.

If you have not looked at it already, you can find a basic summary of the major disorders of the corpus callosum here.

To understand some of this information, refer to the Glossary. First steps for the newly diagnosed are listed here. Review the Frequently Asked Questions here. Therapeutic interventions are listed here.

On these pages you will find information and action plans that can improve the outcome for your child.

Never lose confidence in yourself as a parent. Meet the challenges, surmount the obstacles, and watch your child grow and develop.
